Why this project?

The state of our oceans can’t be ignored.

While at Metabolic, I designed visuals for a report urging global governments to act fast to protect our oceans. The report was part of the #ForTheOcean campaign, pushing the 30x30 goal: protecting 30% of ocean, land, and freshwater by 2030. The work needed to be clear, impactful, and move people from awareness to action.

What was the approach?

I created a clear visual style for the report and adapted it across formats. The design guided readers through key points in a structured, engaging way, from detailed spreads to quick shareable graphics.

Animations brought data to life, making the story memorable and easy to share online.

What are the main takeaways?

Ocean protection is far behind

Only 8.3% of the ocean is protected, less than 3% effectively, and 1.5% of high seas.

Conservation delivers real value

Protecting 30% could unlock $85 billion a year by 2050 through coastal defense, carbon storage, and healthier fisheries.

Urgent action is needed

At the current pace, protection will reach only 10% by 2030, risking biodiversity loss and costly restoration.

Global cooperation is critical

Meeting 30x30 depends on political will and real commitments; many nations have yet to submit plans.

What can we see?

Clear ocean data at a glance, showing where we stand and why stronger protection is urgent.

What was the impact?

Launched at COP39, the report gained media attention and boosted global conversations. BBC Radio’s John Kerry emphasized: “This report is geared to focus people on the urgent need to take steps to protect the ocean itself and the assets of the ocean." It helped drive public and policy awareness, reaching thousands online.
